From Bed Frames to Headboards: The Elements of a Bed
Modern beds borrow from centuries of design, creating the wide variety of options and styles available today. Let’s break down some options and styles you’ll encounter as you shop. The first element to consider is the base of the bed frame. Modern bed frames typically have one of two bases. A platform bed frame will have slats or a base on which your mattress sits directly. A box spring base requires a second mattress—a box spring—that your mattress sits on top of. Both have advantages, so let’s break them down.
Platform bed frames are typically lower to the ground, offering a clean, modern profile. As box springs are stacked, they often sit with a higher, more traditional profile. Platform beds have become a much more prominent option, and you’ll notice most modern beds will have a platform bed frame as the base. But in addition to offering a timeless look, box springs can provide additional support, and a higher bed can be more accessible to get in and out of for people with mobility concerns. The choice is really up to you.
The headboard essentially defines the “look “ of your bed. In addition to its silhouette, you want to take some time to consider the materials and how each might work in a full curation. Below are some notes on each to get you started.
Upholstered Beds
Upholstered beds offer the most extensive range of styles. They can be sleek and modern or more traditional, with wingback designs and button tufting. Crucially, their headboards ensure that they are as elegant as they are comfortable, and a matching upholstered bed frame keeps the look trim and tailored. With a vast array of choices in texture and color, an upholstered bed frame and headboard are super customizable. Many styles, like our Clementine Platform Bed, are made to order with bespoke fabric options. Bright colors and patterns can act as a focal point, while soft, neutral fabrics provide a peaceful and airy feeling that will flawlessly coordinate with your other design elements. Considering the best color, fabric, and pattern allows you to choose a style that complements your room’s current pieces or can give you a helpful starting point when designing a new space.
Wooden Beds
A wood frame is a simple and appealing way to warm up your space. They can be found in a variety of finishes—from modern bed frames to more traditional designs with elegant details. Another benefit of wooden beds is the ease of matching them to other bedroom furniture to create a seamless room design. Looking for a fresh take on a classic? Our Keiry Canopy Platform Bed brings a minimalist teak frame to a timeless style.
Rattan Beds
Rattan and cane are another great way to bring in organic warmth. The woven texture of rattan beds lends a softer touch that is perfect for tranquil bedroom edits. Like other materials, rattan lends itself to quite a bit of variation in style—from vintage charm to clean, modern designs. One of our favorites is the dynamic and refined look of a woven cane style, like this Hannah Platform Bed.
Metal Beds
A metal frame can be a striking choice if you want to add unique visual appeal to your bedroom. Metal beds can be styled to create a cozy Scandinavian cottage feel, a vintage cabin-inspired room, or an effortlessly cool industrial vibe. The key element in common here is that they are distinct and eye-catching in their style and lend themselves well to minimalist yet well-styled spaces.
How to Choose A Bed You Love
When it comes to choosing a bed you love, you’re the expert. Bedrooms present a unique design opportunity. Unlike a living or dining room, it’s not a space for hosting; it’s an escape. By nature, they rarely sit in an open-plan design where every element has to fold into a larger context. This means you have a lot of control over tailoring the look—creating unity throughout and making it a space you love. Use this as an opportunity to let your inner designer play a little.
It all starts with finding a bed you love. The bed is the heart of your bedroom—the only room named for the largest piece of furniture. Start by picturing how you live and rest—a bed should fold seamlessly into your routines. Do you want a cushioned headboard for sitting up to read or enjoying slow mornings in bed? Would a taller bed frame help you get in and out of bed more comfortably?
Beyond practical considerations, what statement does this bed make about your style? Get the button-tufted wingback design you’ve always wanted. Or take this chance to go for something mid-century and classic. Perhaps your bedroom is more of a cozy Scandinavian retreat with light fabrics and touches of wood. Your bed isn’t just at the center of the physical layout; it is an anchor for your aesthetic. With that in mind, let’s talk about styling your bed in the room.
Don’t Sleep On Style: Editing Your Bed Set
The first step is making your bed. When it comes to bedding, we love layers. This means more than piling your bed high—though there’s nothing wrong with that—it means varying textures, mixing colors and tones, and adding pillows of different shapes or sizes. Euro shams and coverlets are a great way to add depth and introduce new textures, creating that inviting, plush depth you see in photospreads.
Layered bedding isn’t just for looks though. It lets you stay comfortable and adjust the curation throughout the year for variety in style and a good night’s sleep through every season. You can check out our bedding collections for designer sets and other exclusive styles.
Now you want to take a broader look. How is the bed working in the space? In particular, we’re looking at the elements around the bed and considering how they sit together and function as a whole.
Nightstands should be proportionate to the bed—typically about 20” by 20” but you can find wider profiles to suit a California King or shorter frames for a low-slung platform bed. The scale is important not only for a sense of balance but also because you want your bedside essentials to be easily in reach and for lighting elements, like a bedside lamp, to sit at a good height to provide light without shining in your eyes.
Another bedside staple, when space allows, is an end-of-bed bench. Benches are great for getting dressed, extra surface space, added storage, and squaring off your bedroom style. Again, you want to make sure your bench is proportional to the bed. It should be about the width of the bed, with 6” to 8” on either side (so it’s easy to move around) and a seat that’s a few inches lower than the top of the mattress.
