Dining Chairs

We believe home design should be stylish and distinctive. From the classic spindle back of a Windsor-style design to the elegant luxury of an allover velvet dining chair like our Lerri Dining Chair, your dining seats are an essential part of setting an inviting table. At Lulu and Georgia, our thoughtfully curated collection has timeless and modern dining chairs to finish your table in style.

Seating is often one of the last elements you choose to furnish your dining room, but it is essential in defining the space's look, style, and comfort. Dining chairs can be strong accent pieces that exhibit contrasting colors and textures or blend seamlessly into the surrounding décor. You can even mix and match the styles of the chairs for a signature touch.

Not sure where to start when shopping for kitchen and dining room chairs for your home? Don't worry; we have you covered. Check out a few tips below.

Seating Chart: Our (Brief) Dining Chair Style Guide

How much can be said about the humble dining chair? It turns out a lot, but to save you time and get you shopping and styling in no time, we’ve compiled a short guide by material so you can start to build your dream dining space with the right knowledge and a good framework.

Wooden Dining Chairs

From rustic to modern to antique revivals, wooden dining chairs offer a broad range of styles. You may be familiar with the traditional Windsor chair (arched frame with a spindle back), mid-century cane-back designs, or more minimalist Scandi-inspired styles like the Ida Dining Chair Set. Streamlined wood designs work great as dining side chairs or kitchen chairs because their lightweight frames and pared-back design can easily fold into dynamic spaces.

Upholstered Dining Chairs

Upholstered designs can range from boldly modern dining chairs to more traditional styles. Whether it’s a simple cushioned seat or all-over upholstery, it’s a great way to bring texture, color, and comfort to your table. A classic style like the Parsons chair—see our Ivey Dining Chair—makes a great dining table chair because it pairs a comfortable cushioned seat and tall back with a minimalist design for versatile styling appeal.

Leather Dining Chairs

In the world of upholstered dining chairs, we think leather deserves its own category. This timeless material is durable, comfortable, and relatively easy care for such a luxurious touch (spills can be wiped away with a towel). From rustic curations to more refined spaces, leather dining chairs can elevate a variety of aesthetics. Designs like this Gallagher Leather Dining Chair can even double as an occasional chair for your living room or home office.

3 Takeaway Tips for Choosing Your Dining Chairs

Let’s be honest; you don’t need an encyclopedic knowledge of all things chair to know what you love and how to make it work in your space. So with that in mind, here are our three top tips— a crash course in dining room seating—to get you shopping and styling right away.

First, start with the table. Your dining table should sit in conversation with your dining chairs. You can read more about mixing and matching in our style guide on How to Pair Dining Tables and Chairs, but a good rule to keep in mind is that chair size is dictated by table size. Most chairs should fit with most tables, but visualize the chair in place. If you have a grand, stately table, try some taller backed chairs to match. If you’re styling a bistro table, find something chic and less imposing in stature. Especially when it comes to dining arm chairs, we always want to mind our dimensions to make sure there is enough clearance to fit between the legs and under the table.

Our second tip: location is everything. We’ve looked at the table; now look at the surrounding space. Is it an eat-in kitchen, small dinette, or full dining room? Kitchen chairs are often used for more casual dining and quick meals—you may want to look to lighter-weight designs and airier frames so they’re easy to move—making this highly functional space more dynamic and easier to clean. Dining room chairs can be more substantial, prioritizing comfort and elegance. Dining table chairs may have cushioned seats, higher backs, or armrests to accommodate family and guests for longer dining experiences.

Our final tip is to make it yours. Rules are made to be broken in design; you just want to know what rules you’re breaking so you can do it in style. Looking for something eclectic? Try mixing and matching styles—you could pair upholstered arm chairs with streamlined dining side chairs. When going for a mix, try to find a unifying note that makes the pairing feel intentional. This common link can be anything from the color of the finish, leg design, or even the vintage style they are inspired by—such as all velvet dining chairs with different silhouettes or an assortment of rattan kitchen chairs for collected warmth. Integrating different styles adds a signature touch—that dash of you. Don’t forget to check out our dining benches and other seating options as well.

However you style them, dining chairs allow you the flexibility to showcase the nuances of your design aesthetic. Whether you want to buy sculptural dining arm chairs for either end of a large table or streamlined frames for a small bistro set, our collections and filters will help you find the pieces you’re looking for. By pairing the perfect chairs with your table, you can elevate one of our most basic shared rituals—with taste.
